Shelter forest belts (windbreaks) - established in agrarian environment and providing habitats for peculiar communities of various species of flora and fauna - can be regarded as totally artificial habitats. At four areas of the Kisalföld region (W Hungary), I surveyed the avifauna of the respective forest belts by means of the line transect method during 3-6 years. The habitat structure of shetterbelts correlated well with the species composition, density and diversity of the avifauna. In agrarian areas under intensive cultivation, windbreaks provide suitable nesting possibilities for several bird species and contribute to increasing the biodiversity of agrarian landscapes.
