This paper presents an overview of the bird species occurring in Maramures county of northem Romania. The Maramures bird fauna consists of 227 species, and a complete list of these species is given in Table 1. One hundred-forty species of these have been shown to nest in the area during the last 50 years. During this period, several species have disappeared from the area, whereas several other species have colonised the area. Certain species have extended their range into the mountainous areas, whereas others have started breeding at lower elevations, due to complex changes in the environment. The most conspicuous factors influencing these changes are probably anthropogenic. For example, Pica pica and Corvus corone cornix, which are typical lowland species, have started nesting at altitudes of 1200-1300 m. Sturnus vulgaris has become the most common nesting species in woodland pastures at elevations of 900-1000 m. The extension of these species' breeding range can be due to forest clear-cuts, allowing these species to invade habitats at higher elevations. Pine plantations in the zone of deciduous forests (350-700 m) have become habitats for birds characteristic of the coniferous forests (Parus ater, Regulus spp., Nucifraga caryocatactes). The final part of the paper briefly describes the main migration routes used by migratory species and local breeders throughout Maramures county.
