Birds are very popular organisms, either for the general public, the research community or nature protection There is considerable research effort devoted to the study of birds. The number of abstracts published in the proceedings volumes of the International Ornithological Congresses between 1982 and 1998, has almost doubled, with a share of works on avian coliservation at 20%. These studies should achieve larger spatial and temporal scales, and should include more demographical and experimental studies. Hungarian ornithology has been depressed for decades, but recently internationally recognized research groups have developed at several institutions. The large databases of MME/BirdLife Hungary, collected by hundreds of volunteers may provide a suitable basis for cooperation between BirdLife Hungary and the research community. Examples are national monitoring, bird migration studies, or national analysis of the IBA database.
